Why You Should Always Choose Travel Insurance

Feb 28th, 2010

Imagine landing on your dream location in all smiles with your favourite outfit, and then without warning you are  approached by the robber who boldly sticks a gun in your face and demands all your luggages and money. You are tempted a hold back a few pounds, but then you rationalize that for the sake of your life you had better hand him all of your money. As you come to your senses while the unscrupulous individual runs off, you are haunted by a few stabbing truths: you are broke, without a phone,  without clothes and identification.

The above description  might seem like a common scene from action films, but this scenario can happen to just about anyone at any time, and thus reiterates the importance of travel insurance when  going to foreign soils. Travel insurance should, therefore, not be seen as a casual ‘clothes item’ that is thrown in one’s luggage without careful planning. In other words it is not an optional item; it is a must have to offer security against any unfavourable situation that can be induced due to robbery, loss, death, sickness, etc.

What Are The Factors To Be Considered When Choosing Travel Insurance?

Choosing a travel insurance that attends to your needs requires careful planing and research. It should be a process that is personally deliberated to evaluate the options and coverage that each plan will offer. Travel insurance is a  personal decision and is not based on what the travel agency assumes to be the best. Free does not mean complete coverage, so if you must invest to save yourself the headache of exorbitant  bills, be prepared to do so. An ideal travel insurance policy will adhere to the guidelines established by the Foreign & Common Wealth Office in the following aspects:

Coverage should be provided for any ailments and injuries that could arise once in a foreign land. It should cover you any time of the day 24/7. For situations that could arise where you are sued and pointed out as the perpetrator that caused damages and injury. Situations that result in personal belongings being stolen Unplanned circumstances that resulted in the premature termination of your trip. High risk activities that are generally excluded from common policies and which you intend to partake of. All expenses that are attached to your stay while you are away, namely: personal accident cover, legal expenses and any other expenses that could prevent you from arriving safely home.

Prevent To Avoid Regret

Not all situations can be avoided, but in cases where you do have the option to avoid an unlikely event, DO make all the effort to do so. The last thing that you want alleged is that you purposefully placed yourself in harm knowing the repercussions that a particular action could have caused. Whilst there are fair and honest travel insurance companies who adhere to the clauses you signed to before travelling, there are also those who will make all attempt to avoid coverage if the blame can be shifted to your end.
